Frequently asked questions:

What does an event involve?

The event begins with a welcome and overview of the program by Slobodkina Foundation Executive Director Ann Marie Mulhearn Sayer. Children walk around the upper gallery with Ann Marie while she talks about Esphyr Slobodkina’s fascinating life, pointing out various paintings, children’s book illustrations, and taking questions.

Children then visit the lower gallery to view art works dating from 1960 to 2002, including handmade jewelry, dolls, silk designs, and antique clothing.

There is a snack break with cookies and juice provided. (Cakes and plates are available for an additional fee.)*

Following snacktime, an interactive performance of Caps for Sale and Circus Caps for Sale will take place on the lawn in the backyard (weather permitting). Children sit on the grass; adults are provided with chairs. Otherwise, performances will take place in the first floor studio/ reading room. Children sit on the floor unless we are notified about special needs beforehand. During the performance of Caps for Sale and Circus Caps for Sale children will be asked the meaning of special words, learn the Caps for Sale song and its accompanying dance, distinguish colors, and become active players in the stories, using their creativity to play the parts of monkeys in book one and circus band entertainers in book two.

A discussion period follows. Children will be asked what they thought of the Peddler’s adventures, why he is special, and why they are special.
